Pragmatic and principled – U.S.-Singapore relationship as a ‘model partnership’ in the Indo-Pacific by IR at Tokyo International University’s Jeffrey Ordaniel and RSIS | S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies’ Collin Koh.
The authors argue that beyond America’s access needs in the Southeast Asian region and Singapore’s geographic attributes, the relationship is “pragmatic” – prioritizing functional cooperation that contributes to cultivating a positive balance of power and a more stable regional environment, and “principled” – grounded in a mutual belief in market capitalism, the rule of law, and ensuring free, secure, and open access to the global commons.
